Police Identify Suspect In Burglaries

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) ―

Baltimore County Police have obtained a warrant for Steven Lee Blankenship, 27, for several robberies. Police believe he frequents the Dundalk area of Baltimore County, and also Harford County.

Baltimore County Police have obtained a warrant for Steven Lee Blankenship, 27, for several robberies. Police believe he frequents the Dundalk area of Baltimore County and also Harford County.

Blankenship is described as 5'8" tall, approximately 180 pounds with green eyes and light brown or blond hair. He is charged with the burglary of the Royal Farms store located in the 600-block of Southwick Drive. Police say it happened Jan. 18 at approximately 2:56 a.m. Police say Blankenship took a large quantity of cigarettes.

On Jan. 28, police issued a media release looking for the suspect of several smash and grab burglaries. Detectives received a telephone call from a viewer who identified the suspect as Blankenship. As part of their investigation, detectives were able to link Blankenship to the Royal Farms store burglary. He is also suspected in other burglaries within and outside of Baltimore County.

Anyone with information about these crimes or the whereabouts of Steven Blankenship is asked to call Baltimore County Police at 410-307-2020 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7-LOCKUP (1-866-756-2587). Cat Burglar Sought

Baltimore County Police have issued an alert for a burglar who has struck in Pikesville and Whitemarsh since September 2009.

Baltimore County Police are searching for a cat burglar who has struck in the White Marsh and Parkville areas several times since September 2009. Although there are close similarities in appearance, detectives do not believe it is the same burglar who was entering homes in the Essex area in the past few months based on investigative information they have obtained. The victims describe the suspect as a light-skinned black male, with a medium to large build, 18-25 years old, approximately 5’11” tall. One of the victims was able to provide a sketch of the suspect.

NAACP Canvasses Neighborhood To Warn Of Rapists

This is a followup to the blog I issued on 11/20/2009 about the rapes happening in Baltimore. Now the NAACP is also getting involved to warn neighborhoods of the ongoing rapes.

I am going to repeat what I wrote in the 11/20/09 blog entry. Women need to be prepared. I would first like to say that you should not go out alone late at night. You should always have a companion, but if that is not possible, you must be prepared to protect yourself.

How do you do this? Always, and I repeat ALWAYS, have some type of personal protection with you. You should at least have a pepper spray in your hand and know how to use it should you ever have to.

I would like to think that some of these attacks being reported could have been prevented. Are you prepared? Could you defend yourself if approached by someone?

In the process, my prayer to you is that if you are involved in one of these muggings that you are not hurt physically. Mentally I cannot help you, but when it comes to protecting you that is when people decide to call me. I normally recommend a few common sense tips that could truly make a difference in life or death.

* Prepare for your safety. This is a year round planning process, not just when you go to the mall.
* When parking in a shopping center, park near well lit areas.
* Always carry your purse over your shoulder and it front of you, making it more difficult to grab.
* Always carry a keychain pepper spray on your car keys and carry them in your hand until you are in the store, then put them in your bag.
* When you stop your car and park, do not sit around messing with your phone or putting makeup on. This gives a mugger a lot more time to get in your car and rob you.
* Walk with a purpose as you go in to the store and always look around you. Keep an eye on your surroundings.
* If you feel like something is just not right, trust your judgment.
* Never leave your purse, cell phone, IPod or any valuables in the car in plain sight. Don't make it easy for thieves to break in and steal your identity and home address. This is an easy target for later on.
* Always lock your car.

Like I said, this is all pretty much common sense every day steps that can and should be taken by you. If you do this, you can effectively reduce the chances of you becoming a victim during the holiday season.

Police Issue Warning To Women About City Rapists

An alarming trend is happening in Baltimore City. There has been a spike in sexual assaults. Now Police have some surprising advice. Andrea Fujii (of WJZ - Baltimore) reports police are not taking any chances. Police are telling woman don't go out after midnight if possible. Police still don't know who is responsible for the rapes and they don't know how many men are involved. Police are on edge hoping to prevent the rapes.

Women in East Baltimore are being warned--at least two rapists are targeting the area.

Are You Camping In Unfamiliar Bear Country?

First of all, NOT ME. At least not without a local scout that is familiar with the local bears and surroundings. I personally would not risk my life or the ones that may be with me just to go camping. Now, let me back this up by saying, if I were more of an outdoorsman, I would have or get the knowledge to feel comfortable in this situation. I have heard that a lot of the National Forests are actually recommending that everyone should carry a Bear Spray when entering these National Forests.

"The Sierra Club wants the Forest Service to require everyone who enters a national forest in grizzly bear country to carry bear spray," Spokeswoman Heidi Godwin said in a news release. "The proper use of bear pepper spray will reduce human injuries caused by bears, reduce the number of grizzly bears killed in self defense, and help promote the recovery and survival of the grizzly bear."

A prime example of the use of bear spray is as follows:

Gary Clutter, a big game hunter from Bozeman, had a face-to-face encounter with a grizzly while hunting a few years ago, and bear spray saved him from a dire situation. "I caught the bear (with bear pepper spray) full in the face when it was four feet away. It was like it hit a wall. The grizzly turned and ran so fast toward her cub, she ran over it," Clutter said. "Then, cub and sow were gone. This worked exactly the way it was designed to work. The bears didn't die and all I'm out is a can of bear pepper spray."

Pepper spray could save a real estate agents life. Between the years 1982 and 2000 more than two hundred real estate professionals were killed on the job. There are hundreds of other agents that have been robbed, attacked, raped or injured while showing houses and just trying to do their jobs. Many agents that have been attacked were not even aware of the risks of their career and had never considered needing to protect themselves. It is a reality that this is a dangerous world and real estate agents need to take precautions against such attacks by arming themselves with personal safety products.

Pepper spray is a convenient, affordable and easy to use option for any real estate professional. This is a non lethal method of protecting yourself that is effective against any attacker. Pepper spray or Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) will bring an attacker to their knees causing temporary blindness, coughing, wheezing, choking and instant nausea. It is more effective than tear gas because it does not lose its potency over time. Pepper spray is also a wise choice because it causes the eyes to involuntarily slam shut, whether the attacker feels pain or not. You do not want to have to search through your handbag because it is lost amongst all of your other things. If you are about to be attacked you are going to be in a panic and scared. You will need to make sure that it is an automatic reaction to pull the spray, point it in the right direction and spray it.

You don’t want to be in that situation and be fumbling to find the canister, not be able to correctly push the button releasing the spray or to spray yourself rather than the attacker. Being ready is half the battle.

Pepper spray is an essential and intelligent way to protect yourself as a real estate agent while showing properties and hosting open houses. Your career does have its risks but you can always feel safe and comfortable by planning ahead for your personal safety.
